German Parliamentary fact finding mission suggests that higher wages and facilities to workers will not threaten garment export

A German parliamentary team, in its fact finding mission to Bangladesh concluded that the readymade garment export would not be threatened by higher wages and facilities to workers. The view contradicts the position widely held by garment manufacturers.

The team comprising of Jurgen Klimke, an MP of the ruling Christain Democratic Union party and a member of the parliamentary standing committee on economic cooperation and development and Niema Movassat, a German opposition MP, also a member of the parliamentary committee, said that social compliance was essential. They added that German importers of readymade garments from Bangladesh would be ready to pay more if Bangladeshi readymade garments manufacturers increased their wages and facilities to workers.

The two member team suggested that it was not fair that only 1% of the total garment value should go to workers. They also added that German importers do not take any responsibility when importing goods from Bangladesh but would have to pay for social compliance if the goods were made in Germany.

The German fact finding mission also suggested that only a small percentage of readymade garment manufacturers are socially compliant despite the fact that many sitting MPs had stake holds in readymade garment industries.

The team suggested that it was possible to be social compliant and develop exports at the same time. Germany provides development assistance to Bangladesh and the visit to Bangladesh was to gather enough facts a new development programme is finalized.
