Installation of Newer and Larger Ready Made Garment Units Essential

Readymade garment exports has increased by a staggering 42% from last year and a China shift is attracting potentially profitable markets such a Japan, South Africa and the Middle East to name but a few. India and China are also sourcing to Bangladesh not only for the better price but also as the quality is considered reliable.

Despite the increased exports, so far increased demand has been met by existing readymade garment units that have simply increased the capacities already installed. However, favourable developments such as the generalized systems of preference (GSP) is likely to push up demand in Europe and Japan even further and thus, realistically the only way the readymade garment industry is going to benefit in the long term, is to install newer units. As failure to meet demand could result in a loss of goodwill, rapid  expansion is absolutely imperative.

Although increased demand and expansion has been sparked by lower competition from China and other countries, the government needs to play a major role. Some of the important areas that need to be looked at are low supply of gas and electricity, but financial assistance for installation of newer and larger units is also essential. Roads and transport and port facilities also need to be upgraded. In this regard, the BGMEA plan to set up small localized power plants exclusively for the readymade garment industry is a good sign and should relax some of the pressure on the government, but it is a very critical period in the evolution of our garment industry and therefore there is no time to relax.

Essentially the readymade garment industrial sector is the biggest export earner of our country. Increased demand will push up this earning even further and increased production will also increase the number of jobs.
