Textile mill owners urge government to ensure adequate supply of gas and electricity

In a meeting of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, BTMA, organized to discuss the EU’s relaxed rules of origin and the effects it will cause on textile mills, the mill owners complained that at least 30% of their production capacity is remaining unutilized due to the energy problem of the country.

Textile Minister, Latif Siddiqui, was present at the meeting and the mill owners urged the government to ensure adequate supply of gas and electricity so that they could remain competitive with the rest of the world.

Although the EU’s relaxed rules of origin permits RMGs to import fabrics from other countries and is seen as a tremendous benefit for them, effectively it will increase competition for the textile industry, which without adequate power is facing severe difficulties in being able to compete.

One of the problems that local textile mills face is a tremendous pressure to adhere to delivery time schedules, which would otherwise not exist if they were in full capacity.

Another problem the mill owners face is the frequent changes of yarn and cotton prices which have hiked the prices of yarn and fabrics locally.
